Bio
Character Name: Doctor Ridley Aloysious Parrish-- Lee to his close friends.

Gender: M

Age: 32

Physical Description: Tall and lanky. Hair that colour that's too light to be brown and too dark to be blond. Grey eyes.

Personality: Open, garrulous and friendly. Generally assumes people are intelligent. Passionate about his work and its impact on humanity.

History/Bio: Born in Lusaka, Zambia, to parents of European descent. Moved to the States at the age of 7, where his father lectured at the University of California Irvine College of Medicine and did research into the links between viruses and cancer and his mother lectured and studied on alternate farming techniques. Over the summers, he and his parents would return to Africa, where they volunteered with various clinics and she would often give advice on increasing crop yields. In 1982, they returned to research the prevalence of HIV/AIDS and were in Mozambique when they were caught in the crossfires of the civil war there. His mother was killed.

When they returned to the States, he was sent to a boarding school in Oregon. Growing up, he grew to love the great outdoors, backpacking, rockclimbing, swimming, canoeing, etc., but was less interested in organised sports. He called the tropical climate of Zambia, the rainy weather of Oregon, and the sunny coast of California home to him and he adapted easily. He also grew to appreciate the scientific drawings of plants he had inherited from his mother. They are his greatest treasure.

He ended up following in her footsteps, pursuing an undergrad degree in Plant Biology at Cornell University in New York and his masters and doctorate from the University of British Columbia. His work in paleobotany and its indications of climatological changes and more recent botanical and climatological interactions were controversial at the time, but drew the interest of a segment of the American military interested in how his work might apply to other human-inhabited planets. His non-citizen status gave them pause, however.

He immersed himself in academia and field studies for a few years-- lecturing at the University of Zambia and continuing research into the impact of climatological change on the ecology-- until he was contacted about a mysterious international programme in need of a few botanists.
